Cambodia | Stranger in a Foreign Land
May 14, 2010
Yoem Sinoun comes from a village in Kandal Province, Cambodia.
She has five sisters and their father passed away some time ago. Yoem went to work in Malaysia to support her family. However, it was very difficult for her. It was not only physically demanding, but also took a toll on her emotionally and psychologically as she was far away from family and friends. Being a stranger in a foreign land, Yoem did not have anyone she could turn to.
In 2002, Yoem found comfort and hope while listening to the Women of Hope program in her native Khmer language. She became a regular listener, and came to accept Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior. She wrote to the Cambodian Women of Hope team:
“One day, I was feeling really down. I turned on my radio, hoping to find some program in the Khmer language which I could understand and listen to. As I tuned the dial, I heard something in Khmer, and discovered that it was a program called Women of Hope.
I was both very excited and curious, and started listening to it. Soon, I was listening to it every week. The program helped me so much when I was sad or worried, and especially when I was lonely. It made me happy, and gave me hope and encouragement in life. It seemed my good friend that was always with and comfort me.
After some time, I heard the presenter ask if I wanted to receive Christ in my heart. She gave instructions over the radio on how I could ask Jesus to be my personal Lord and Savior. I started to pray after her, and asked the Holy Spirit to dwell in my life.
Ever since I received Jesus as my Savior, I have yearned to know more about God but I did not have a Bible or hymnbook. I prayed and decided to send a letter to the Women of Hope presenter in Cambodia. It was not long before she sent me what I needed most. I was very excited and I know that God is always taking care of me.
I am really glad that this program is still being broadcast, and continues to encourage, comfort and build-up other women like myself.
May God bless you!”
Prayer and Praise
- Praise God that Women of Hope is reaching out to women who are lonely, and sharing God’s love with them.
- Pray for Yoem and other women who have to live and work overseas to support their families. Pray that they will be able to receive support and encouragement from God’s Word, and those around them.
